Cia de Foto, an inspiring Brazilian photography collective

without comments

I recently went to a panel discussion about photography collectives at The Photographer’s Gallery. I wouldn’t say it was a very successful discussion, but there was one group represented, Cia de Foto, that really made a big impression.

Cia de Foto is a collective based in Sao Paulo whose three member photographers collaborate on every project and whose photography is always signed with the name of the collective. They’ve each contributed their individuality to the collective identity of the group, so much so that it is hard to tell who took which photographs… and the interesting thing is it doesn’t matter to them.

They were invited to the UK by the Format Festival, which is taking place in Derby right now. Apparently their multimedia piece was intended to be exhibited in a gallery owned by the Derby City Council, however, the Council decided it wasn’t suitable for its venue as there are (very brief) images of sex and naked children.

Here is the link so you can watch it, with the volume turned up. (Warning: extremely beautiful and inspiring).
